Alephonsion Deng recounts his experiences and those of  brothers Benson and Benjamin along their harrowing journey to safety from war-torn Sudan, to America. They vividly recall the family, friends, and tribal world they left far behind them and their desperate efforts to keep track of one another. Their story is a captivating memoir of Sudan and a powerful portrait of war as seen through the eyes of children. And it is, in the end, an inspiring and unforgettable tribute to the tenacity of even the youngest human spirits.

The Lost Boys of Sudan are more than 27,000 boys who were displaced and/or orphaned during the Second Sudanese Civil War (1983-2005, about 2 million killed).

Many of the boys came from the predominantly Christian southern section of Sudan who were fleeing persecution by Muslims that dominated northern Sudan. The name was given by aid organizations, including the International Rescue Committee program which resettled some of these refugees from Sudan to the United States. Lost Boys are boys without parents or orphans.
