CSPP-LA Alumni, Judy Chu, Wins Big in Congressional Race

A warm congratulations to Judy Chu, PhD, 1979 CSPP-LA alumna, for winning the House of Representatives seat for the 32nd Congressional District! This monumental win is two-fold—Dr. Chu will be the first Chinese American woman as well as the first female psychologist to win a seat in the House of Representatives.

Dr. Chu, a long-time educator and activist in the San Gabriel Valley, gained a strong following of Latino, organized labor, and female constituents, serving on the Board of Equalization, the Garvey School Board and the Monterey Park City Council, and ended with a 62% victory over Betty Tom Chu and Christopher M. Agrella. Dr. Chu’s reputation as an activist and community leader is surpassed only by her efforts to fight for equal representation of immigrant and minority populations.

CSPP Dean, Dr. Morgan T. Sammons, remarks, “On behalf of CSPP, I extend our heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Chu for this remarkable achievement.  As we move forward with the President’s agenda to create a more equitable health care system, voices such as Dr. Chu’s will be essential in ensuring that all Americans are represented.  Dr. Chu, as a psychologist and an alumnus of the California School of Professional Psychology, is both an extraordinary individual and an outstanding representative of the profession of psychology.”
