Division I (Clinical and Professional Practice) of the California Psychological Association, agreed to create a Section for Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (SPPP) at its October 5, 2008 Board meeting. The proposal, presented by Barbara Short, Ph.D. and Gilbert Newman, Ph.D., was agreed to unanimously by the Division I Board. Barbara will represent SPPP on the Division I Board. Barbara Short, Ph.D., an Advanced Candidate at PINC, and Michael Donner, Ph.D., a Candidate at SFCP, will collaborate on the development of SPPP. CPA President-Elect, Doris Penman, Ph.D. has been involved in fostering the creation of SPPP, and welcomes increased involvement of psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists in CPA. The 2009 CPA Convention will be held in Oakland, April 16-19. Dr. Penman issued a special invitation for psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists to become more involved in this Convention. In subsequent years, SPPP members will be able to have an increased presence at CPA Conventions for the presentation of papers, workshops, CE events, and the like.
SPPP will create a listserv for all CPA members and associate members in California who are psychoanalysts or psychoanalytic psychotherapists. At present, there is no unifying link allowing psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists to communicate in California. Eventually, all institutes and practitioners in California can be linked through this listserv. This listserv will allow clinicians and institutes to communicate about their local CE events, and foster increased exchange of information (including referrals), resources, and ideas among clinicians who share the analytic perspective. Also, the CPA website can be accessed for information about SPPP, and eventually provide a page for an SPPP e-newsletter, postings about current issues such as insurance and evidence-based practice, and a membership practice resource guide.
SPPP will create a framework in California for the recognition, encouragement, and support of psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy in working with the broader public community to foster accessibility to mental health services and greater diversity of psychoanalytic and analytically informed practitioners.
In addition to the pre-existing structure and resources to help create SPPP, CPA brings to the broader analytic community an existing framework for addressing statewide analytic concerns about legislative and regulatory issues. SPPP will share in the umbrella of protection afforded by this service.
If you are a Division I member, we will be contacting you shortly after January 1, 2009, about how to join SPPP. If you are not a member, please join. You can go to the CPA website and join on-line, or download an application and send it in. Remember to join Division I as well as CPA. At present, there is no additional fee for joining SPPP. Just join Division I, and you will automatically be contacted about your interest in joining SPPP after January 1.
